SUKKUR, May 2: The irrigation officials, who were supposed to release water into the canals originating from Guddu and Sukkur barrages on May 1, have not released water in the canals on Thursday (May 2).

Water was not released into the canals, including Kirthar Canal, Rice Canal, Dadu Canal, Ghotki Canal, Pat Feeder Canal and Begari Canal.

Irrigation sources said that the shortage of water in River Indus had delayed the opening of the canals.

They were reluctant to disclose any probable date for the opening of the canals.

The sources said that the water position recorded on Thursday at Guddu and Sukkur barrages was upstream 25,812 cusecs and 24,175 cusecs respectively while the downstream water position was 6,585 cusecs and 24,312 cusecs respectively.

An official of the control room at the Sukkur Barrage told Dawn that there was 70 per cent shortage of water in Guddu and Sukkur barrages.

He said that the Turbela Dam was at dead level and no water was released from there and it was said that it would take another 15 days for the release of water.

The farmers of these areas have expressed concern over the non-supply of water, as the situation is likely to affect the Kharif crops.

They said that it was for the first time that after the closure of the canals for one month, the waterways had not been opened on the schedule date.

KILLED: One person was killed and another injured in an armed clash between the Brohis and the Essanis in Abdul Rehman Brohi village, Shikarpur, on Tuesday.

Mohammad Hassan Brohi was killed while Nadir Hussain was injured in the clash. No arrest was reported.

The tribes had had a dispute over a piece of land for last many years.
