TOBA TEK SINGH, May 2: A two-member delegation of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation reviewed on Thursday development in irrigation sector for which the bank had provided financial assistant to Pakistan.

The delegation, accompanied by the Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority (PIDA), inspected the recently built water course of Chak 297-GB. The water course committee members apprised the delegation of the hardships faced by them regarding water management.

They demanded that the share of farmers in the construction of water courses should be reduced from 55 per cent to 20 per cent.

The delegation was told that soon water distributaries would be handed over to the farmers organizations. The Area Water Board has so far registered 27 organizations while registration of more organizations was in progress.

WATER SUPPLY: The tehsil municipal has received Rs10.05 million for the replacement of damaged pipelines for water supply and work on the project will start soon.

This was stated here on Thursday by tehsil Nazim Chaudhry Rafiq at a press conference.

He said the governor was apprised of the contamination of water due to broken pipelines during his recent visit here. The governor had promised financial assistance for the replacement of old pipelines and he kept his promise, said Mr Rafiq.

He said town’s all three union councils have already been given Rs1.35 million for the development schemes by tehsil council.

LITERACY: The district government has decided to utilize Rs3.5 million financial grant for literacy programme in eight union councils of Kamalia tehsil.

An education department official said 124 literacy centres have been set up for the purpose. A teacher and a helper have been appointed at every centre.

HIGHWAYS: All the highways in the Punjab will be handed over to district councils with effect from July 1 and in future, their construction and repair will be the responsibility of district councils.

A highways department official said here on Thursday that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) would provide required money for the construction of Jhang-Toba Tek Singh-Chicha Watni-Burewala Road.

He claimed that all roads in the district would be widened from 12 feet to 24 feet and constructed according to motorway standard. The Toba Tek Singh-Shorkot Cantt and Jhang-Gojra roads would be widened from 10 feet to 20 feet.
