PESHAWAR, April 30: Provincial Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Prof Mohammad Ibrahim has said that masses have rejected the policies of President Gen Pervez Musharraf, asking him to tender resignation and hand over power to his senior colleague.
Speaking at a Press conference here at Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday Prof Ibrahim said: “People have expressed no confidence on Gen Musharraf’s policies and renounced his so-called reform agenda. He should resign on moral grounds and hand over power to an interim government to hold free and fair elections in the country.”
He claimed that the turn out was poor in Peshawar and other areas of the province. Despite reducing age limit, he claimed that only five per cent voters turned to the polling stations. He said polling stations were presenting deserted look both in urban and rural areas. He said the JI activists had collected information which proved that people supported the opposition point of view and refused the government policies.
Prof Ibrahim said President Musharraf had already completed his tenure and his stay in power could lead the country to political and economic instability. Musharraf resignation could serve the larger interest of the country, he added.
Meanwhile, central leader of PPP and former interior minister Naseerullah Babar said despite wastage of money the government had failed to bring voters to the polling stations. In a statement the PPP leader said that despite spending huge amount and arrangements voters refused to poll their vote to give mandate to Gen Pervez Musharraf to continue his policies. He said in some areas Nazimeen had brought minorities to the polling stations in district Nowshera and other parts of the province.
