LARKANA, April 27: Experts at the international workshop on Moenjodaro have proposed construction of drains to avoid damages to the relics of Moenjodaro from rains.

They were speaking at the third day session of the workshop at Moenjodaro on Friday.

The experts pointed out that the unevenness of the lanes at the site could hinder the smooth flow of rain water and this could ultimately destroy old structures, which were already threatened by water logging and salinity.

M.H. Panhwar expressed his concern over the plantation of eucalyptus trees at Moenjodaro and said that they caused great damages to the ruins due to their lengthy roots.

Sohiko Yamada from Japan, the author of the draft of the revised master plan for Moenjodaro-1997, presented his plan of establishing a model village project in a hexagonal shape close to Moenjodaro as a part of landscaping.

The plan suggested that there should be a landscaping up to the Moenjodaro Airport to attract tourists.

Saeedur Rehman, the director general, archaeology department, suggested that a centre of activities be established at Moenjodaro with fully authorized staff having a mandate not only to save the site but also to establish a chain of coordination amongst the experts and the donor agencies around the world.

He urged Unesco to take this decision as early as possible and stressed the need of training people, connected with this field.

Mrs Junhi Han, the leader of Unesco delegates, Henry Cleere, Frank Briscoe, Thomas Urban, R.A. Shamsi, Dr Shahid Mehmood, Dr Mohammed Aslam, Afzal Brohi, Saleemul Haq, Dr F.D. Kakar and Tahir Saeed spoke on the occasion.

The site director said that the experts would sum up their proposals in the shape of recommendations on April 27, to be submitted to the Unesco and the Pakistan government for future planning for the conservation of Moenjodaro.

KILLED: A man, Ghulam Hussain Kori, was killed and three others received bullet injuries on Friday when unknown armed men fired at a wagon on the outskirts of Akil village.

The armed men intercepted the wagon and sprayed volleys of bullets on the passengers.

The injured were identified as Sikandar Narejo, Abdul Qadir Memon,10, and Saeed Memon.

They were taken to the Chandka Medical College Hospital.

Sources said that the attack was a result of a dispute between two groups of Chandio and Kori clans over a guava orchard.
