KARACHI, April 25: A group of civil-society organizations held a meeting with Justice Majida Rizvi, the chairperson of the National Commission on Status of Women, to discuss Zafran Bibi’s case who was sentenced to stoning to death by the Sessions Court of Kohat, says a press release.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the matter and share their concern and ask for immediate action by the Commission on it. The chairperson informed the group that she was deeply disturbed to read the news item. She an appropriate response would be made after reading the complete judgment. She said she would put up this before the entire commission at the commission’s meeting and issue a statement on behalf of the commission in this regard.

She also expressed concern at the fact that Zafran Bibi is being kept in solitary confinement instead of being kept in simple imprisonment as per law. In response to a question about discriminatory laws against women, she said that those laws were currently under review by the Law Committee of the Commission.

The group consisted of representatives of the Aurat Foundation, Shirkat Gah, HRCP, WAF, Amnesty, IPC, PAWLA and some journalists.
