Lanka in Shrajah Cup final
By Tanvir Ahmad
SHARJAH, April 14: Sri Lanka qualified to play in the final of the Sharjah Cup 2002, after defeating New Zealand by 46 runs in the penultimate match of the one day tri-nation contest here on Sunday. Pakistan and New Zealand will now decide who plays Sri Lanka in the final when they meet in the last match of the preliminary round on Monday.
Scores: Sri Lanka 243 for 9; New Zealand 197 for 9 in 50 overs.
Sri Lanka completely dominated today’s match. The Kiwis found the spinning trio of Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Dharmsena and Upal Chandana too hot to handle and at no stage of their innings they looked like give even a semblance of fight back.
New Zealand disappointed and Nathan Astle failed to impress at all here. Craig McMillan remained top scorer with 49.
Chaminda Vaas started the rout, having trapped opener Mathew Horne lbw and then magnificently catching Nathan Astle off his own bowling. Kiwis were 2 down at 31. Chris Harris and skipper Stephen Fleming put in some resistance but that also proved short lived. Harris was unlucky to fall victim of a bad decision to be adjudged lbw by umpire Tiffin. TV replays confirmed that it was bat and pad.
The last bastion of resistance, Craig Macmillan fell to Chandana after making 49. After that nothing was left in the match and the result was a foregone conclusion.
Earlier, batting first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka made 243 for in 9 which was a decent score, more so because they had lost their skipper in the very first over, trapped lbw by Daryl Tuffy for duck. Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara did a very good consolidating job. They added 114 off 132 balls for the second wicket, Atapattu making 82 from 94 balls and Sangakkara got 50 — his first in one day internationals. What was commendable was that all along the partnership these two scored at 5 runs per over which was in stark contrast to what Imran Nazir and Yousaf Youhana did in their match against Sri Lanka on Friday. The Pakistanis were never able to lift the run rate in identical situation that day above 3 an over which in the end cost Pakistan the match.
Mahela Jayawardene and Chandana, the man who was mainly responsible for his team to collect 239 the other day against Pakistan, contributed 39 and 21. However when the 5th Lanka wicket fell at 169 the run rate dropped considerably and they looked like being restricted by Kiwi bowlers to a modest 200 plus. But then some enterprising hitting by Vaas helped them to reach 243 at the end of 50 overs.
For NZ, Harris got 3 for 43, Styris and Butler picked 2 wickets each for 47 and 32 respectively.
