LAHORE, April 10: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal has no plans to put up “active resistance” against the army government for it sees little chances of its success in the changed world scenario after Sept 11, 2001.

Jamaat-i-Islami naib amir and MMA’s chief coordinator Liaquat Baloch told this reporter here on Wednesday that the alliance would instead concentrate more on the October polls.

However, the MMA would oppose the referendum and various options in this regard would be discussed at the April 17 meeting of heads of the alliance’s six component parties, he added.

These options included holding of an all party conference and a countrywide tour by the central leaders of the MMA to address corner meetings for building an opinion against the referendum.

Mr Baloch said MMA chief Maulana Shah Ahmad Noorani had been formally requested to convene the APC of the anti-referendum parties.

Talking about the Constitution and the manifesto of the alliance, he said after approval by six parties’ heads in their April 2 meeting, the two documents had been given to the parties for discussion and formal approval by their central executives.

Besides, entry of the MMA into possible alliance with “like-minded” parties, he said, the component parties would also be allowed to make individual electoral adjustments on the seats allocated to them for the October polls.

Earlier, he condemned the language used by Gen Pervez Musharraf in his Minar-i-Pakistan public meeting against political and religious parties and use of state machinery for the meeting.

He also said that Musharraf had not taken a wise step by announcing referendum as it would have negative repercussions both for the army and the nation.
