SC orders release of former MPA

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, April 1: The Supreme Court on Monday ordered the release of former Muslim League (Nawaz) MPA from Rawalpindi Chaudhry Tanvir Khan.

He was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on charges of owning properties disproportionate to his known source of income.

The SC bench, which granted him bail, consisted of Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Justice Rana Bhagwandas and Justice Sardar Raza Khan.

Advocate Wasim Sajjad represented the former MPA, and NAB was represented by Accountability Bureau prosecutor-general Raja Bashir.

The bench, in its short order, stated: “For the reasons to be recorded later on, this petition is converted into appeal and allowed. The petitioner is released on bail subject to his furnishing of bail bonds to the sum of Rs5,000,000 with two sureties, and personal surety of the same amount to the satisfaction of the registrar of this court.”

Mr Tanvir is also required to submit his passport to the SC. He will also have to furnish an undertaking that pending decision of the reference against him in an accountability court, he will not leave the country. The SC, however, directed the accountability court to dispose of the case within six months.
