US fails to oust chief of C-arms agency

THE HAGUE, March 22: The executive of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) rejected on Friday a US motion to oust the Brazilian head of the international agency.

A spokesman for OPCW director general Jose Bustani said the motion was rejected by a simple majority of the executive of the Hague-based organisation.

“Director general Bustani has said that he will not resign at the request of one or a few countries,” said the spokesman.

The United States had been demanding that Bustani resign and not seek a second term as OPCW head, arguing he was unable to steer the organization successfully in its task of eliminating chemical arms.—AFP
