KARACHI, March 19: The newly-designed silencer for auto-rickshaws, costing between Rs400 and 450, is being introduced in the city on the directive of Sindh Ombudsman Justice (retd) Haziqul Khairi.

At a demonstration before the Ombudsman in the presence of DIG Traffic and Highways Saud Mirza and officers of Sindh Environmental Protection Agency, the new silencer was found to be emitting noise within the permissible limits. More than 29,000 auto-rickshaws ply in the city, which apart from causing smoke pollution cause exceptionally high levels of noise, resulting in several neurological diseases, blood pressure, etc.—PPI
