HYDERABAD, March 1: Tribute was paid to the late Professor Mirza Abid Abbas, one of the founders of the City College, Hyderabad, and the first secretary, Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE), Hyderabad, at a condolence meeting held at the premises of the City College here the other day.

In his presidential address, the former vice chancellor of Sindh University, Prof Dr G. A. Allana, said that Prof Abbas was an institution and he had given new dimensions to the City College.

He said that Prof Abbas had been a teacher of a high calibre and his services in the cause of education could never be forgotten.

He said that a comprehensive history of the City College, Sindh University, and other important educational institutions of Sindh should be compiled for the benefit of the coming generations.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Syed Qavi Ahmed said that Prof Abbas was a symbol of that generation which had created Pakistan.

He said that people like Prof Abbas and Mirza Qaleech Baig should always be remembered.

He said those nations which forgot their benefactors and failed to protect their history could not protect their geographical frontiers.

The incumbent principal of the college, Maqsood Ahmed Qureshi, said that the name of Prof Abbas had become synonymous with the City College and added that its library would be named after him.

The son of Prof Abbas and a noted journalist, Mazhar Abbas, said that Prof Abbas was not only his father but had also been his teacher, guide, and mentor.

Several old students of the late professor, including Prof Inayat Ali Khan, Murad Ali Mirza, Edgar Victor, Tahir Rizvi, Advocate Qazi Munawar Ali, Ali Hassan, and M. Ali Adil paid glowing tribute to his services.
