LARKANA, Feb 10: The random survey on the outbreak of a skin disease leishmaniasis undertaken in selected villages of Larkana and Dadu districts jointly by the World Health Organization, National Institute of Health and local doctors has been completed on Saturday.
Dr Farooqur Rehman Soomro, group leader of the survey teams, told Dawn that so far 28 selected villages in both districts under low, medium and high risk categories were surveyed, where around 3,500 positive cases of leishmaniasis were detected.
He added that in Dadu district, 2,000 cases were detected in nine villages of Mehar, Khairpur Nathan Shah and Johi talukas while in Larkana district, 1,500 cases were found in 17 villages of Larkana, Shahdadkot, Mirokhan, Kambar, Warah and Dokri talukas.
Dr Soomro said that the number of the cases would rise if entire population of the two districts was surveyed.
Some 6,000 vials of Gulcantime injection donated by Iran would arrive in Larkana and Dadu in three weeks, he disclosed and added that 10,000 ampules of same injection would be reaching from Afghanistan.
The WHO had dispatched these medicines to Afghanistan and now their half quantity would be sent to the affected districts of Sindh, Dr Soomro explained.
Dr Qaid, emergency medical officer of the WHO, has extended his stay for one day here to compile findings and results of the survey conducted in Dadu and Larkana districts.
BLACK DAY: The activists of Sindh People’s Students Federation (SPSF) wore black arm-bands and hoisted black flags on their offices in the educational institutions of Larkana district as a mark of protest against the Mirpurkhas and Hyderabad district Nazims for the resolutions in the two district councils supporting Gen Pervaiz Musharraf to remain president for five years.
A general body meeting was also held at Chandka Medical College here in which PPP leadership was asked to initiate a no-confidence motion against the district Nazims of Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas.
Those who spoke at the meeting included Basharat Bhutto, Malook Jagirani, and others.
TEACHERS: All Sindh Primary Teachers Association (ASPTA) has condemned the deduction of Rs25 from the salary of a primary school teacher by banks here and have demanded that the bills of the teachers be passed by 25th of each month from the Treasury office so that they could get their salaries by 1st of each month.
In a meeting of the ASPTA, Larkana, presided over by its city president, Aijaz Ali Abro, the recovery of a kidnapped primary teacher Ayaz Ali Tunio was also demanded.
Others who attended the meeting included Ali Gul Chandio, Apa Razia Sultana, Apa Arbab Khatoon and others.
