Zahir Shah to return next month

ROME, Feb 8: Afghanistan’s former king Zahir Shah will end almost 30 years in exile and return home next month to throw his support behind the country’s interim government, the king’s son said on Friday.

“My father is going to go there to live for good, to help our people, to bring democracy,” Mir Wais Zahir said.

In preparation for his return, the king underwent medical tests earlier this week and the results were very good, he said.

“The doctors said that even though my father is 87, he’s like a man of 65,” he added.
