Needy without zakat for seven months

Published February 9, 2002

VEHARI, Feb 8: Zakat committees have not distributed funds among the needy and deserving people for the last seven months in the Vehari district.

Established in August last, these zakat committees had invited applications from the poor for the distribution of zakat, but no practical step has so far been taken in this respect.

The destitute have been paying frequent visits to district zakat committees for the release of funds but without any success.

Social circles, councillors and lawyers have asked the Punjab governor to direct the district zakat committees to immediately distribute zakat among the deserving persons.

AXED TO DEATH: A man axed to death his sister on Thursday night on suspicion in Chak 14/WB.

Munir Ahmed of the same village had reportedly developed relations with ‘A’. Nazir Ahmed admonished his sister to mend her ways, but to no avail. On Thursday, ‘A’ was sitting beside with her lover when Nazir came there and killed his sister with repeated blows of an axe. Her lover however managed to escape from the scene.

Police have arrested Nazir and are investigating.

ARRESTED: Mailsi police on Friday claim to have arrested the Vehari district vice-president of the defunct Sipah-i-Sahaba, Abdul Majeed, and shifted him to some unknown place.

Meanwhile, several leaders and workers of religious and jihadi outfits have gone underground due to fear of their arrest.
