ASI shot dead, cop injured by dacoits

GUJRAT, Feb 8: A local police ASI was shot dead while a constable sustained injuries when dacoits opened firing on them during a bid in the Subhan Restaurant near Julliani, GT Road, on Thursday night.

Reports reaching here revealed five dacoits stormed into the restaurant, held up the customers and the employees and started looting them. Meanwhile, one of the hotel employees called the Saddar police.

Seeing police, the intruders resorted to firing. ASI Riaz Ahmad died instantly while constable Abdur Rauf received injuries. Rauf was taken to a nearby hospital in precarious condition.

Two of the accused were identified by police as Irfan and Idrees while three were unidentified.

Police have registered cases under sections 395, 353, 302, 324, 148 and 149.

REMOVED: The local Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) on Friday removed encroachments on the Jail Chowk, Hassan Chowk, Bhimber Road and Circular Road.

STRIKE: The traders of Malikwal and Mandi Bahauddin on Thursday kept the shutters of their shops down to resent over dacoity in a local goldsmith’s house.

Four dacoits reportedly took away cash, prize bonds and gold ornaments worth Rs3.5 million from Ihsan Elahi’s house.

The panic-stricken traders assembled outside the tehsil Nazim’s office, urging him to bring the culprits to book.

Later, they returned on the assurance of the Nazim that the dacoits would soon be arrested.
