Registration of mosques begins

SIALKOT, Feb 1: The registration of mosques and madaris has been started in Sialkot and Narowal districts.

Ulema have been asked to contact the authorities concerned for the purpose.

Official sources said on Friday that March 23, 2002, was the last date for the registration.

RESCUE 15: The Sialkot police have decided that they will introduce the Rescue 15 in Daska and Sambrial to check increase in crime.

This was disclosed by Sialkot SSP Muhammad Tahir while talking to newsmen here on Friday.

He said the plan had met with a great deal of success in Sialkot and it would soon go ahead.

In Daska, he said Rescue 15 building would soon be constructed near boys degree college while the construction would take place near dryport in Sambrial with the collaboration of local business community.

He maintained police public liaison committees were being formulated at sub-divisional level in the district to overcome the menace of crime.

The SSP announced minor punishments for 27 policemen, including four sub-inspectors and 11 ASIs, for their wrong investigation and breach of duty.

DIST GOVT: The local district government is considering to give special powers to the councillors at union council level for monitoring the performance of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

This was stated by Sialkot District Coordination Officer (DCO) Cap Zahid Saeed (retired) at a meeting with local body representatives here on Friday.

He said the NGOs working well would be encouraged at every level and would be allowed to participate in comprehensive national development projects.

Sialkot district Naib Nazim Ali Asjad Malhi said they had recommended the Punjab government to ban all the NGOs for prosecuting their monthly audit reports before the district government.

Swedish journalists: A group of Islamabad-based journalists of Sweden on Friday visited the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry and various industrial units in Sambrial for preparing a fact finding report on the export-oriented city.

They also interviewed SCCI president Daud Ahmad Chattha.

Talking to this correspondent, the foreign journalists expressed their satisfaction over the eradication of child labour from the export-oriented soccer ball industry of Sialkot.

Led by Mr Staffan Heimerson of Aftonbladet, the Swedish journalists also collected views of local newsmen about the kidnapping of US journalist Daniel Pearl of Wall Street Journal. The Sialkot based journalists told them that they were also perturbed over the situation.

CANCELLATION: After the cancellation of Narowal route, the 67 up and 68 down railcar will run to and fro between Sialkot and Rawalpindi.

The railcar will depart from Sialkot at 6.30am on Feb 2 (Saturday).

SHOT DEAD: Dacoits late Thursday shot dead a trader and took away cash and valuables worth hundreds of thousands of rupees in different parts of the district.

Five dacoits barged into trader Inamullah’s house in Pakki Kotli village, shot him dead and injured his wife Nasim Akhtar and daughter-in-law Shahida on resistance and fled with cash, gold ornaments and other valuables worth Rs400,000.

Sialkot Saddar police are investigating.

In Islamnagar (Pucca Garah), a dacoit was handed over to police by villagers when he, along with another, was fleeing with Rs60,000 in cash looted from Faisal Butt’s shop. His accomplice escaped with the amount.

Meanwhile, five robbers made off with cash, jewellery and other valuables worth Rs250,000 from landlord Muhammad Rafiq Khan’s house in Rachara village, Daska tehsil.

Motra police have registered a case against accused Yousaf, Shahbaz and Tahir with no arrest so far.

DEATH SENTENCE: A local additional district and sessions judge Haji Muhammad Nazir Langah has awarded death sentence and a fine of Rs200,000 to Muhammad Latif in a murder case here on Friday.

According to the prosecution, the convict had killed one Imtiaz Ahmad during the urs of Baba Shah Theekari over a minor dispute on May 25, 1998.
