KARACHI: 617 drivers arrested

KARACHI, Jan 27: Traffic police have arrested 617 drivers of public transport in the city during its campaign against reckless and negligent driving.

A spokesman for police said that the drive was launched on Jan 8 in view of the increasing complaints of the reckless driving by public transporters.

He said the traffic police arrested 617 drivers under section 279 of the PPC. They had been produced in different courts where some of them had been released on bail after furnishing a surety bond.

He said the traffic police nabbed 165 drivers of public transport for reckless driving in District South, 159 in East, 157 in South, 104 in Central and 32 in Malir.

Another campaign against drivers under 18-year-old, was also in place and the police took legal action against 194 such drivers and fined them heavily.
