Warrants issued in Kolkata attack case

NEW DELHI, Jan 25: India said on Friday that Interpol had issued a warrant for the arrest of Dubai-based Farhan Malik, who heads a group India suspects of carrying out the shooting of police outside the American Center in Kolkata.

Interpol has informed India’s top investigatory body, the Central Bureau of Investigation, that it has issued a warrant for Malik’s arrest and extradition to India, Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani said at a news conference.

Indian officials say Malik, accused of having ties to Pakistan’s intelligence agencies, telephoned officials in Kolkata after the attack on Tuesday to claim responsibility and vow more strikes. Some investigators believe the police were the target of the gunmen and Washington has played down the possibility the attack was aimed at US interests.—AFP
