LAHORE, Jan 24: Police killed a proclaimed offender, arrested some days ago, in an ‘encounter’ at Mohlanwal on Thursday.

Police claimed that on a tip-off that PO Maqbool alias Jajji Jhambail and his accomplices were catching fish from the Ravi, they reached there. The anglers took to their heels and took refuge at the outhouse of Ghulam Rasool in Mohlanwal.

Police said that the outlaws opened fire when they were asked to surrender. Police retaliated and the crossfire continued for some 25 minutes.

The PO was killed and one of his accomplices, Rasheed, was arrested. Others managed to escape, they said.

Police claimed that Maqbool was wanted for his involvement in many crimes. The PO was involved in the killing of Salim Ghora and his father Tufail in Gujjarpura some two months ago.

Quoting Rasheed, police said that those escaped from the outhouse were Amanat, Anwar, Javed alias Jaidi, Mukhtar and Ghulam Abbas.

Police sources, however, said that the PO had been in the custody for the last couple of days.

The body was sent to the city mortuary for autopsy. No case in this regard has so far been reported.
