Indian UAV shot down: report

Published January 19, 2002

JAMMU, Jan 18: An Indian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was shot down by Pakistani troops in Londi area of Kathua district of Jammu on Thursday.

“The Indian UAV was shot down by the anti-aircraft fire of the Pakistani troops. The debris of the plane fell inside the Indian territory,” The Hindu daily reported on Friday, quoting sources.

The newspaper said: “Last week, an (Indian) UAV came down in Chatha area of R.S. Pura sector in Jammu region due to a technical snag.”

Meanwhile, reliable sources said on Friday that Pakistani troops fired at the Indian UAV on Thursday as it violated the Pakistani airspace in Sialkot sector, “causing a total damage to it,” and it was seen dropping to ground in the occupied territory of Jammu.—APP

INDIA: India, on the other hand, said on Friday that a report that one of its spy planes had been shot down by Pakistan was wrong and was aimed at increasing tensions on the border.

“The report is baseless, malicious and a deliberate attempt to heighten tension along the border,” a defence spokesman told Reuters here. “There is no such incident.”
