Commuters slam police extortion

SHEIKHUPURA, Dec 30: Scores of commuters and transporter, plying their vehicles in the district, have expressed concern over the harsh attitude of the traffic police.

They alleged policemen on duty were bent upon extorting money monthly and frequently.

One of the victims said police deployed on the Faisalabad, Sargodha, Jaranwala, Gujranwala and GT roads were always busy receiving bribe. Anybody failed to grease their palms had to lose their vehicles or they were being challaned despite having complete documents.

There are about 5,000 commercial vehicles operative in the district. Transporters alleged every vehicle had to pay Rs300 to 500 every month to traffic police which was Rs150 to 200 in the past.

Sarfraz of Faisalabad told this correspondent that he was on his way back home with family when a sub-inspector intercepted him near the National Food factory. He said he managed to move after paying him Rs300, although, the car’s documents were in order.

Truck driver Mustafa said he was going to Sheikhupura from Sukheki Mandi when an inspector extorted Rs500 from him near Salar Bhattian.

Wagon driver Idrees, plying his vehicle between Sheikhupura and Warburton, said in charge of the traffic police, Faisalabad, received Rs100 from him daily besides a monthly of Rs300.
