KARACHI, Dec 28: The chairman of the National Highway Authority, Maj-Gen Farrukh Javed, on Friday called on Sindh Governor Muhammedmian Soomro in the Governor’s House and reviewed the highway projects in Sindh, particularly Lyari Expressway and Karachi Northern Bypass.

The governor said Sindh played a key role in the economic development of the country, and industrial activities all over the country were related to this province.

“We desire early completion of the ongoing highway projects in Sindh”, he said, adding that President General Pervez Musharraf wanted an early start of work on the Lyari Expressway and Karachi Northern Bypass projects. “These projects will help discipline the traffic in Karachi.”

He said both projects were of great significance and would greatly benefit the Karachiites.

Mr Soomro said comprehensive planning was under way for the resettlement of those likely to be affected by the Lyari Expressway project. He said the completion of highways projects in Sindh would prepare the ground for accelerated socio-economic development of the country.

He said the Sindh government would extend every possible cooperation during the completion work of highway projects.

Gen Farrukh said the highway network played a vital role in the economic and social uplift of the country. Keeping in view the significance of Sindh, the highway projects here were being completed on a priority basis.

He said particular importance was being attached to the dualization work of the Karachi-Lahore-Peshawar national highway and the Indus Highway falling in Sindh.

The governor said that all possible measures were be ing taken for timely completion of highway projects in the province.

Keeping in view the importance of the Lyari Expressway and Karachi Northern Bypass projects, measures are being taken for early construction of these projects.

These projects will also help improve the traffic system in Karachi, he added.—APP
