ISLAMABAD: Capital to get water from seasonal rivers

ISLAMABAD, Dec 22: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has formulated a plan to utilize water of five seasonal rivers in and around Islamabad for drinking purpose, a well-informed source told Dawn.
The source said the Rs22.345 billion project would provide 80.08 million gallon per day (MGD) water to the Capital. Under the plan, small dams will be constructed on the tributaries of the five rivers.
One of these dams, Khanpur-II, is to be built on River Haro at an estimated cost of Rs7.5 billion, and some 34.50 MGD water will be supplied from it.
Another Rs585 million dam would be constructed on Shadrah spring to provide nine MGD water. Similarly, a Rs1.4 billion dam on Korang River would give an out put of 16 MGD water.
A dam on Dor River will be constructed at a cost of Rs5.128 billion. The river has a capacity to supply some 65 MGD water, but some 16.14 MGD water is expected to be acquired from it, the source said.
Moreover, a Rs8.92 billion dam to be constructed on another tributary of River Haro, (H-4), would supply some 4.44 MGD water to Islamabad.
The source said two more small dams, Rajoya and Pina, would also be constructed in the nearby areas of River Dor and River Haro.
