KARACHI, Dec 21: Interior minister Moinuddin Haider has said that police reforms are being introduced to make police force more efficient, professional and people-friendly.

“A Rs 1.9 billion package will be released to modernise police”, he said at a high-level meeting held under his chairmanship at the Sindh Secretariat here on Friday.

The IGP Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah, briefed the minister about restructuring the provincial, regional and district police offices in Sindh.

Mr Haider was also briefed about separation of investigation and prosecution branches in Sindh Police.

He was informed that new vacancies of police prosecutors will be filled through the Sindh Public Service Commission. He was also apprised about the updated syllabus for the training of ASIs and constables.

The minister said that a major chunk of Rs 1.9 billion package will be spent on the provision of transportation facilities, telecommunications system, establishment of forensic laboratories in the four provinces as well as the federal capital.

He laid greater emphasis on the need for closer inter-provincial police co-ordination.

He said that public safety committees were being set up to keep a check on police at the district and provincial levels.

Only the people of high integrity and good reputation would be inducted on these committees, he added.

Among others the meeting was attended by Sindh chief secretary, Javed Ashraf Hussain, home secretary, Brig Mukhtar Ahmed, provincial law secretary and others. — APP
