THREAT: The Farmers Association Faisalabad and other associations have threatened that in case an action was not taken against sugar mills for not paying the fixed support price to growers, they will stop sugar cane supply and block traffic on main roads.
Talking to newsmen here on Sunday, FAF president Tahir Saeed and office-bearers of the Kisan Board Faisalabad and the Anjuman-i-Behbood-i-Kashtkaran said almost all the mills had been paying Rs35 to Rs40 per 40kg to growers against the fixed price of Rs48.
They said mills’ managements had been using various methods to pressurise growers to purchase sugarcane from them at low price. They said brokers and commission agents had also started purchasing sugarcane for Rs30 per maund by visiting fields or setting up purchase centres in open spaces in clear violation of the rules and government instructions.
They apprehended that in case the government failed to stop highhandedness of millowners, growers would stop cultivation this cash crop in future.
They urged the governor to direct the functionaries concerned for raiding mills and illegal purchase centres of commission agents.
