Jail visits by doctors proposed

By Our Correspondent

ABBOTTABAD, Dec 9: District Naib Nazim Barrister Javed Abbasi has expressed his displeasure over the poor health and sanitation conditions at the Abbottabad Jail.

During his surprise visit to the jail, the barrister, who was accompanied by members and Nazims of union councils, announced that new toilets with water storage tank would be constructed by the district council members contribution and work would be started in weeks.

He took notice of complaints that serious patients at the jail, who were referred to hospitals by the jail doctor, were not shifted by the police for treatment.

The Naib Nazim promised that efforts would be made for starting weekly visits by senior and specialist doctors to the jail.

Councillor Nighat Afsar advocate asked the staff to provide the list of inmates booked in minor cases who could not hire the services of legal advisors, so that free legal aid could be provided to them.

Mr Abbasi found that a large number of prisoners had been in the prison for a long time without trial as police failed to complete the charge sheets and evidence against them.
