ISLAMABAD, Dec 9: Quaid-i-Azam University students have demanded repatriation of Afghan refugees as soon as the new government sets up in Afghanistan.

“We are already undergoing a lot of socio-economic problems. Taking the opportunity when things have started settling down in Afghanistan, refugees should be sent back,” said Ms Hina, a student of Defence and Strategic Studies department.

Responding to the reports that refugees are reluctant to go back since they have established businesses here, a group of students said, “No matter even if they (refugees) have married to Pakistanis or are running businesses, they should not be given citizenship”.

The students said, “It is not possible for Pakistan to accommodate more refugees as the country is itself facing the problem of over population.”

They said most of the evils whether it was blood sucking klashnikov culture or drug trafficking, came into Pakistan through Afghan refugees, adding, when country like Australia did not allow just 400 refugees to dock to its shores in the name of economic stresses than why Pakistan had homed more than 30 million Afghan refugees.

Some of the students termed the ongoing US campaign in Afghanistan as service to its national interests rather than war against terrorists.

When the students were asked whether the US would stand by its commitments with Pakistan, they said, Americans had never fulfilled their promises with any one whether it is Pakistan or Palestine.

Majority of the students upheld the government’s stand against Taliban in the backdrop of September 11 attacks the US.
