PESHAWAR, Dec 5: Talks between the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the provincial government remained inconclusive here on Wednesday as the world body refused to resume its operations in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) without security cover.

“Government acknowledges our stand...and we have told them that the agency is not going to resume its operations in Fata without proper security cover,” said Niaz Ahmed, a UNHCR representative based in Peshawar.

The UNHCR suspended its operations in Fata in the backdrop of an attack on its staff by unidentified armed men at Sarokali, some 30km from here, on Tuesday.

Government authorities, sources said, tried to persuade the United Nations High Commission for Refugees to resume its operations, particularly the shifting of Afghan displaced persons from the Jallozai makeshift camp to Kurram and Bajaur Agencies, but to no avail.

As a result, the process came to a halt.

“Agency is not going to resume its Fata operations at least for one more day due to security reasons,” said Mr Niaz.

An officer of the Sarokali police station where the vehicle had come under attack, told Dawn that they had yet to make any headway to trace the accused.

He said that an FIR had been registered against the unidentified persons. “But the police have failed to find any clue to the culprits owing to the location of the area,” said the official.

Six suspects held: Police has claimed to have arrested six persons on Wednesday in connection with the attack on United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) vehicle in Shabqadar, coming from Bajaur Agency to Peshawar on Tuesday evening.

According to a handout issued here, the police station concerned had detained six suspects for questioning and Charsadda police was making efforts to nab the actual criminals.

The press note said the police and Frontier Constabulary contingents had been deployed in the area to beef up security, while special mobiles had also been detailed for patrolling in the area.

Extra preventive measures have also been adopted under the direct instructions of the provincial government to track down the culprits.
