KARACHI, Dec 3: Pakistan Amateur Boxing Federation (PABF) plans to organise another All-Pakistan Boxing Ranking Tournament from Jan 14 to 16 at National Sports Training and Coaching Center (NSTCC).
PABF has designed a comprehensive plan to get national pugilists prepared for the upcoming international tournaments including South Asian Federation SAF Games, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation SAARC Games and Asian Games.
All the aforesaid Games are scheduled to be held in the first six months of 2002.
Boxing authorities have requested Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) to give them permission to increase number of boys in training camp which has been accepted.
PSB, earlier, had allowed PSBF to select 12 boys for training camp and now its number has been increased to 24.
However, a source in PABF ruled out any possibility of sending the pugilists abroad for advanced training because they say the new plan will be suffice to fulfil the training requirements for the big tournaments.
If the SAF Games had held on its scheduled time, Pakistani boxers would have surprised entire nation by their performance as they were in a mentally tougher and better prepared after the conclusion of their training tour to Azarbyjan.
PABF Preparation Plan stated that holding of such tournaments on a regular basis in the country will not only help discover new and hidden talent but also assist in judging the progress of boxers in the camp. A new boxer will replace the old one who will fail to show better performance in the tournaments.
Citing an example, he said Shaukat Ali who had the honour of achieving Gold medal in King’s Cup Boxing Championship, has not been selected for the camp because of his absence from recently concluded Ranking Tournament in Karachi.
Presently some 24 boxers are being trained in the camp at NSTCC under the supervision of Cuban Coach Ronaldo Alvaries.
Most of the boxers have been abroad for a month and 18 days training and also participated in the camp for SAF Games.
Saleemul Haq of KESC have been appointed as Coordinating officer of the camp. National Boxing Camp at Karachi will continue till the SAF Games to be started by March 30 in Islamabad.
