PESHAWAR: Nangarhar’s new setup assures UN of cooperation

PESHAWAR, Nov 29: The new administration ruling Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province on Thursday assured the UN and other international relief agencies of fullest security to enable them to carry out their relief and reconstruction work in Afghanistan.
In a signed statement issued to the Press here, Corps Commander of Jalalabad Haji Muhammad Zaman and Security Chief Haji Hazrat Ali said that elaborate security arrangements had been made to ensure security at the Torkham-Jalalabad and Jalalabad-Pul-i-Istehkam Highway with round-the-clock patrolling of Northern Alliance troops to safeguard the lives and property of inhabitants living on both sides of the main road.
They said that the UN and other international relief agencies could resume their activities with fullest confidence.
The people of the province, they said, would extend full cooperation and assistance to the world body and other international agencies in carrying out relief and reconstruction work.
Incidents of killings and looting on the main road linking Jalalabad with Kabul had caused alarm and concern among travellers, particularly western journalists, after the fall of Kabul to the Northern Alliance forces. Three journalists were shot dead by unidentified gunmen near Kabul early this month.
