ISLAMABAD, Nov 28: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan has called for the establishment of a war crimes tribunal to investigate the massacre of unarmed prisoners of war (POWs) at the hands of coalition forces in Mazar-i-Sharif.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Imran termed as baseless the media reports that the pro-Taliban fighters’ wish to become martyrs had led to the catastrophe, noting that those people had surrendered in Kunduz to remain alive rather than get butchered.

He said he had warned the UN about the impending bloodbath in Kunduz through a petition, however, he added, the UN decided not to intervene.

The slaughter of POWs, he said, had no parallel in the history of modern warfare and was a breach of all human rights conventions.

The carnage of Mazar-i-Sharif, which had taken place under the supervision of the US and British forces, had sent shock waves throughout the world, Mr Khan observed.

The PTI chief said the ‘war on terror’ was increasingly appearing as a ‘war of terror’ as shown by the fact that the US had armed and directed the operations of the savage Dostum militia despite its brutal track record.
