MUZAFFARABAD, Nov 23: AJK President Maj-Gen (retd) Mohammad Anwar Khan on Thursday condemned unprovoked Indian shelling and called upon the United Nations to take measures to stop such acts.

“Targeting the civilian population, particularly women and children, is height of cowardice and I fail to understand why the Indians do this always”, he said, while talking to newsmen at the Combined Military Hospital, where he came to see the Kashmiris injured in the Indian firing.

The president said India’s despotic actions, such as shelling along the ceasefire line, were aimed at suppressing the will of the Kashmiri freedom fighters and reflected the volume of the frustration New Delhi was undergoing following its failure in containing the popular freedom movement in the held territory.

He said the people living along the ceasefire line deserved great admiration of the nation for braving the cowardice acts of the enemy with courage for long.

He called upon the UN, international human rights organizations and peace-loving nations to take a serious notice of the savage actions of Indian occupation forces in Kashmir and exert pressure on New Delhi to resolve the longstanding Kashmir issue in a peaceful manner.

Mr Khan expressed concern over increasing extra-judicial and custodial killings in the held Kashmir, saying that such incidents were a challenge to the world conscience.

The injured told the president that the incessant Indian shelling had been causing great hardships to them, but they were facing the situation with courage.

“Unprovoked shelling by the enemy troops has badly disturbed our daily life, rendering us unable to work in the fields and earn livelihood for our families”, an injured informed the president.

The president directed hospital authorities to provide all possible treatment to the injured and if necessary shift them to Islamabad for further treatment.

An official informed the newsmen that the government would provide Rs20,000 each as compensation to the six injured admitted to the CMH.
