KARACHI, Nov 23: Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro on Friday declared that no extortion would be allowed in any part of the province and asked the people to pinpoint extortionists so that the government could take an action against them.

He was speaking at an inaugural function of a Bachat Bazar, organised by the local town committee in Korangi here on Thursday evening.

He announced that like other areas, Landhi and Korangi too would be cleared of the menace of extortion. However, improvement was not possible without the cooperation of the people, he said.

The governor said the government would launch Khushali Bank from December in Karachi in order to give small loans to unemployed and skilled people.

He said a branch would also be opened in this area from where loans would be provided on easy instalments.

Mr Soomro congratulated the organisers for holding the Bachat Bazar on no-profit-and-no-loss basis, with the cooperation of manufacturers.

He observed that Bachat Bazar greatly facilitates the middle and low-income people.

The governor said that world over, the major role for maintaining price level devolves upon the consumers themselves. He said unless the consumer resistance councils would not come forward, no government would be able to do any such thing in a better manner.

Referring to complaints by the elected representatives regarding civic problems in the area, the governor said that the whole of city was faced with numerous civic problems and it was because that elected representatives and the departments concerned never paid proper attention to the needs of the people.

Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan said it was a unique type of bachat bazar which is being organised by two towns — Landhi and Korangi — and it would benefit the residents of these towns.

Nazim Karachi acknowledged that Korangi and Landhi areas are infested with crime and extortion groups and pledged to take some concrete measures.

About 50 manufacturers and wholesalers have established stalls in the bazar selling a wide range of items, including garments, rice, pulses, soaps and detergents and even fruits and vegetables are being sold at prices significantly lower than the market rates.

Naib Nazim Tariq Hasan, Nazim Landhi Town and Korangi Town Mohammad Shahid and Abdul Jameel also spoke.—APP/PPI
