KARACHI, Nov 10: The City Government’s literacy department has established a literacy centre in the Juvenile Jail in Landhi. All required items related to imparting literacy training to inmates have been obtained through donations.

The Literacy department has initiated its functions by operating a literacy centre in the juvenile jail where certain inmates are being given basic training to teach and impart non-formal education to other inmates.

To improve or establish literacy centres in jail and establish and maintain vocational and technical training centres with the cooperation of the private sector is one of the aims of the department and it is being looked after by the EDO in coordination with a District Officer.

About two dozens of these educated young inmates are expected to complete their teacher’s training before Ramazan.

Besides, the Literacy department has established ten new literacy centres in Orangi with the support of the Rotary Club and the Bright Education Society, whereas the department plans to establish 147 literacy centres.

EDO Col Muzaffar told PPI that the department was in touch with the Associations of Traders and Businessmen for the promotion of literacy and making conducive environment at workplaces for workers to learn to read and write.

The department has proposed a plan under which uneducated workers could receive basic education from 7pm to 9pm in government school buildings. However, this plan needs cooperation and close working with the education department.—PPI
