ISLAMABAD: ICT to get Rs79.7m: Education reforms

ISLAMABAD, Nov 9: The education ministry has allocated Rs79.71 million for Islamabad Capital Territory(ICT) under Education Sector Reforms for the financial year 2001-02.

The amount will be spent on increasing literacy, rehabilitation of facility in existing primary education, revamping of scientific sector, curriculum development, quality assurance and higher education and early childhood education in the ICT, an official source told Dawn.

A meeting of inter-provincial education secretaries will be held in Lahore on Saturday so as to give final shape to the funds allocated for the education reforms during the current financial year.

Out of Rs79.71 million about Rs8 million will be spent on increasing literacy rate including adult literacy in the ICT during the current financial year, Rs11.2 to be spent on rehabilitation of facility in existing primary schools, Rs4 million on revamping of scientific sector, Rs12.95 million on curriculum development, Rs0.56 on early childhood education and Rs43 million were allocated for minor projects in ICT.

However, no amount was allocated for quality assurance and higher education in the ICT.

Similarly, the ministry has fixed Rs1.49 billion to be spend during the current fiscal under the education sector reforms to be carried out across the country including Federally Administered Triable Areas (FATA), Federal Administered Northern Area(FANA) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir(AJK).

# Out of the total amount fixed for the ESR totalling Rs1.49 billion, about Rs296.5 million will be spent on federal programmes, Rs1132.73 million will be given to the provinces, while Rs65.06 million will be spent in FATA, FANA, AJK.

Further break-up showed that out of Rs1.49 billion about Rs342 million will be spent on literacy during the current financial year, Rs288.8 million on Education For All, Rs96 million on revamping of science sector, Rs387.05 million on technical stream, Rs350 million on quality assurance and higher education and Rs30.44 million have been fixed for innovative programmes, respectively.

# Of Rs342 million allocated for literacy programme, including child labour programme and adult literacy, about Rs150 million will be spent in federal programme, Rs93.76 million in Punjab, Rs37.71 million in Sindh, Rs30.94 million in NWFP, Rs17.59 million in Baluchistan and Rs12 million will be spent in FATA, FANA and AJK.

The ministry of education has fixed Rs288.8 million to be used in education of all projects including rehabilitation of facility in existing primary schools, establishment of EFA units.

Out of these Rs252 million will be spent on rehabilitation of facility in existing primary schools across the country- Rs131.27 million to be spent in Punjab, Rs52.79 million in Sindh, Rs43.32 million in NWFP, Rs24.62 million in Balochistan and Rs16.8 million have been fixed for FATA, FANA, and AJK.

The remaining Rs13.5 million will be spent on establishment of education for all units across the country- Rs7.03 million in Punjab, Rs2.82 million in Sindh, Rs2.32 million in NWFP, Rs1.31 million in Balochistan, while Rs5 million has been fixed for community primary schools in federal administered area.

About Rs400 million have been allocated for curriculum development during the current financial year. Out of which Rs8 in federal programme, Rs122.27 million in Punjab, Rs71.93 million in Sindh, Rs86.31 million in NWFP, Rs79.12 million in Balochistan and Rs19.42 will be spent in FATA, FANA and AJK.

The ministry fixed Rs 350 million for quality assurance including teacher education and training, national education assessment system, national testing service, resource centres (tehsil/district) and monitory for quality across the country. Out of these Rs15 million to be spent on federal level, Rs117.2 million in Punjab, Rs47.14 million in Sindh, Rs38.68 million in NWFP, Rs21.98 million in Balochistan and Rs10 million in FATA, FANA and AJK, while Rs100 million has been fixed for higher education in federal programme.

Similarly, Rs30.44 million have been fixed for innovative programmes during the current financial year, out of which Rs6.6 million to be spent on early childhood education in Punjab, Rs2.6 million in Sindh, Rs2.17 million in NWFP, Rs1.23 million in Balochistan and Rs0.84 million to be spent in FATA, FANA and AJK. While Rs17 million has been fixed for federal programmes-de- centralisation, good governance, capacity building, public private partnership and information communication technology in basic education video textbooks and libraries.
