KARACHI, Oct 19: Some 38 NGOs have made a commitment to plant 80,000 trees and also to protect them.

The city government will maintain a liaison with them and provide them technical know-how.

Such an assurance was extended at a meting of NGOs held at Frere Hall under the chairmanship of Nazim Karachi.

On the occasion, the meeting was informed that it will be a long- term plan in which besides government departments, various social and non-governmental organisations and common citizens would also be associated.

It was informed that in order to overcome the shortage of plants, the city government will establish two or three nurseries in every town from where people could get plants easily. The forest department has been issued directive.

Under the programme, more plants will be planted in areas which are short of trees whereas to meet water shortage, treated water will be used for their irrigation.

The city government will operate water tanker service to supply water to deficit areas.

Monitoring committees which would also include NGOs’ representatives, will be formed to monitor the growth of plants.

Certain NGOs proposed maximum plantation of ‘Neem’ trees and fruit bearing plants in the parks.

Speaking on the occasion, City Nazim Naimatullah Khan described the growing pollution in Karachi a matter of highest concern. He said the purpose of this meeting with representatives belonging to various walks of life is to finalise the tree plantation programme with their guidance.

He said “this is our and our children’s city. Our future is linked with it so we have to serve it collectively”.

Naimatullah observed that NGOs serve the humanity and this programme is also a service to humanity. While seeking their cooperation in this regard, he said it will be a prolonged programme which would continue until the city is made greener.—APP
