ISLAMABAD, Oct 16: US Secretary of State Colin Powell on Tuesday endorsed Pakistan’s stance that the issue of Kashmir is “central” to relations between Pakistan and India.

“We too believe the Kashmir issue is central to the relationship,” Mr Powell told reporters following talks with President Gen Pervez Musharraf.

The president said that Mr Powell had also indicated the willingness of the US to “play a role” in the resolution of differences between the two countries.

Mr Powell said his discussions with President Musharraf had addressed the need to promote stability in South Asia, which he described as a “critically important” part of the world.

Mr Powell said the Kashmir dispute could be resolved if “all parties” engaged with a willingness to address their concerns in mutually acceptable ways.

“Issues must be resolved through peaceful, political and diplomatic means and not through violence,” he added.

Mr Powell said that use of force should be avoided and human rights should be respected. “Terrorism has no place in the civilized world,” he added.

In reply to a question on Kashmir, Mr Powell said he would impress upon Pakistan and India that dialogue between them was important “that is needed now.” He said this was the message he was taking to the Indian leadership. He noted with appreciation the telephonic call made by President Musharraf to Prime Minister Vajpayee earlier this month.
