Red Wings escape defeat

UNIONDALE (New York), Oct 14: The surprising New York Islanders were 10 seconds away from extending their season-opening streak to five winsbut instead the Detroit Red Wings snatched a 5-4 victory Saturday.

Luc Robitaille got the equalizer with 10 seconds left in regulation and Steve Yzerman scored his second goal of the game 2:22 into overtime as Detroit ruined the Islanders’ homecoming after a 4-0 season-starting road trip.

For a time it looked like a happy homecoming as the Islanders grabbed a 4-3 lead with 3:59 left in the third period on Oleg Kvasha’s second goal of the night.

But the Red Wings pulled goaltender Manny Legace for a sixth attacker in the final minute and forced overtime when Robitaille followed up after goalie Chris Osgood stopped a shot from the right point by Yzerman.

Carolina 5 ATLANTA 2
