Pollution hits Gilgit

GILGIT, Oct 9: Stench and smoke that comes from open dumped garbage at the abandoned sites along the University Road, Gilgit (Old College Road) and poses serious threats to health, environment and beautification of the area, the local leaders said.

The municipal garbage and solid waste of Gilgit city is being dumped at the College Road in the absence of proper dumping sites. Most of the northern areas of the country do not have sanitation system which is contaminating streams and rivers.

A group of students at the Government Postgraduate College, Gilgit told Dawn that the scattered and stinking garbage not only marred the area beautification but also destroyed the hygienic conditions of the northern areas.
