Fans jailed for match violence
PARIS, Oct 8: A French court jailed a soccer fan of Algerian origin for a month on Monday following disturbances that forced a soccer match between France and Algeria to be abandoned.
The man, a French citizen, was convicted of throwing objects during Saturday’s game at the Stade de France in Paris. He was not named.
World Cup champions France were leading 4-1 with 12 minutes left when Algerian fans invaded the pitch. The game was called off.
Eight other young French nationals, all of Algerian origin, will appear before magistrates in November charged with disrupting a sporting event, court officials said.
They face a maximum one year’s prison sentence and a fine of 100,000 francs ($14,000) if convicted.
Saturday’s friendly was the first soccer match between France and Algeria since the North African country claimed independence in 1962.—Reuters
