China, Indonesia dominate opening day with big wins

KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 China and Indonesia swept all before them with crushing opening day victories at the Thomas and Uber Cup team world championships on Sunday.

World and Olympic champion Lin Dan took just 20 minutes to thrash Peru's Antonio De Vinatea 21-4, 21-6, leading his team to a 5-0 whitewash of the South Americans and a dream start to China's defence of the men's title.

With third-ranked Jin Chen and world No 10 Chen Long chalking up equally emphatic wins China threw down the gauntlet to rivals Indonesia, who responded with impressive wins for the men's and women's teams.

The dominant Chinese have won the past three editions of the Thomas Cup, for men, and six consecutive Uber Cups, for women.

The women's team matched the men's exploits with an unstoppable 5-0 win against the USA, with world top two Wang Yihan and Wang Xin enjoying easy victories.

Indonesia are seen as China's toughest challenger in the men's tournament top player Taufik Hidayat led the 13-times champions to a whitewash of minnows Australia in their opening match.

Former Olympic and world champion Taufik powered to a 21-12, 21-12 victory over Australia's Jeff Tho and is hotly tipped to shine in the tournament, despite questions over his stamina.

The second seeds also produced emphatic singles wins by Simon Santoso and newcomer Dyonisius Hayom Rumbaka.

World No 1 Lee Chong Wei, who has five Malaysian Open titles to his name and was crowned world player of the year here on Sunday, leads host nation Malaysia's challenge.

But his team missed out on their opener against Nigeria when the Africans failed to show after their flight was cancelled and the Badminton World Federation (BWF) awarded Malaysia an automatic 5-0 victory.

Denmark, the fourth seeds and the only non-Asian team seen as serious contenders, managed a clean sweep against Poland with Danish number two Jan Jorgensen seeing off Hubert Paczek 21-15, 21-16 in a tenacious performance.

Japan and Korea are seen as China's closest challengers in the Uber Cup, but fourth-seeded Indonesia, three-time champions, will be buoyed by a perfect 5-0 against Australia, with world number 19 Maria Febe Kusumastuti leading the charge.

Korea beat South Africa without dropping a rubber while five-time winners Japan dismissed Germany 4-1.

Japan were disappointed when his top shuttler Eriko Hirose crashed 15-21, 12-21 to Germany's No 1 Juliane Schenk in the first match.

The top two teams in their respective groups advance to the quarter-finals where a fresh draw will be conducted for the knockout stage.
