Notia on course to clinch second victory in a row

LAHORE, Aug 21 A card of six events comprising moderate field has been chalked out for the 16th Lahore Summer Meeting to be held at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Although numerically the strength of runners is not large, numbering from six to eleven, in the events to be contested, the handicap seems tight in a couple of races promising some exciting finish.

In the Chakwal Plate, class V division I, to be gone over the sprinting distance of 1,000 metres, which features the Sunday's race card, there are only six runners.

In spite of the short-listed field in this race, half of the runners (three) look on chance on recent form and performance.

The four-year-old filly from Key Guy, Notia, who registered a facile victory in the Jashn-e-Azadi Cup will be on the course to make it two wins in-a-row on Sunday.

Notia has been punished with more weight to be carried and it runs in the same kind of company. At the same time the distance of the race has been reduced by 200 metres that goes in her favour.

The handicap figures have put the filly, Zalzabeel in advantageous position and with the colt, Sakhi, also a speedster the three will be battling for supremacy, giving a slight edge to Notia.

Her owner cum trainer sends Notia out only when he is sure of victory.

The supporting and the fifth race, the Chakwal Plate class V division II, to be contested over 1,000 metres, has ten runners, if there are no last-minute withdrawals.

The field is a mix-up of form and of those on seasonal debut.

However, Black Mamba, Real Hero, Monte Negro and Pretty Girl are the chance ones. They should fight it out.

The four-year-old colt from The Conqueror, Tayyab, looks a good thing in the fourth race, the Sohawa Plate Class VI division I-A, to be contested over the shorter version of sprinting distance of about 800 metres.

Tayyab ran fourth on his debut on Aug 1 and should do justice conforming to his bloodline credentials this time.

His close opponents should be Red Stone and Pawan Prince in the same order.

The mare, Monica, is back on the course after a long time and nothing could be predicted about her racing fitness. However, she is capable of upsetting all calculations.

Mr Gujrat, Bedouine Raider and Sona Chandi look good in the third race, the Sohawa Plate class VI division 1-B.

Bedouin Raider, a son of celebrated sire Bedouin Invader, is a colt from established pedigree of class sprinters and is running after a long absence.

The second race is badly handicapped because there is a difference of three stones ten pounds weight from the first to the last horse taking part in the race.

The best handicap race is considered in which the weight scale difference is minimal or does not vary between at the most two stones or 28 pounds from the top horse to that placed at the bottom.

It is a generally accepted formula of handicapping in racing countries abroad that the shorter the difference in weight scale between the top and the bottom horse is, that race will result in close competition. But here handicapping is done on one's own formula.

Finance Minister given the penalty of top weight at ten stones and ten pounds still has a chance because in the race over 800 metres, the weight scales should not disturb the running of the horse or bring it under pressure.

Brave Heart and Victory Smile should do well although they are not of the class of top weight Finance Minister.

The conditions under foot are very ideal at present. The rains, almost a daily routine for over a week now, have turned the course velvet green, facilitating a good run for the speedy horses.

Under a good rider, Finance Minister should not let any horse to pace with him.

The first race seems a match between Zeeshan Love and Bhola Badshah with the third place an open affair.
