Victory Light illuminates Racecourse

LAHORE, Sept 22 Fancied filly, Victory Light, spell bound race-goers by her giant strides when galloping to an easy success to make it two wins in a row during the midweek Lahore Gymkhana Meeting at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

The chestnut filly, owned by Chaudhry Sagheer Ahmad, was given a perfect ride by the apprentice riding boy, Usman Ali, to score his maiden success on seasonal debut.

The owner took a great risk of declaring a novice to ride the filly, when Usman had no experience of riding in races. He not only justified the owner's confidence reposed in him but also exhibited promise for further exploits.

Victory Light beat All Is Well, trained by Salahuddin and ridden by the riding boy M. Jameel, by a big margin of distance with Capri Queen third.

Prior to the race, some punters expressed their apprehensions on the choice of the rider, but Usman silenced his critics with his efficient handling of the filly.

This was the fourth race of the day.

Two owners (Khawaja M. Atif and Chaudhry Sagheer Hussain), as many trainers (Rashid Latif and Mohammad Afzal) and riding boys M. Waseem and M. Jameel shared the honours, bringing in a brace of winners each to highlight the afternoon proceedings.

Owner Khawaja M. Atif, fresh from his return after performing Umrah, was rewarded with a double through filly Gee Gee in the opener and Mera Baba in the fifth and the supporting event and were ridden by riding boy M. Waseem and saddled by Rashid Latif.Chaudhry Sagheer's double came through Coure in the third race and Victory Light in the following event.

Riding boy M. Jameel, who is exhibiting excellent performance in the saddle currently, rode home two winners -- Coure and Jal Thal.

Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards suspended riding boy Munir Ahmad from riding for three months for his erratic handling of the bay colt, Gold Star, in the fifth and supporting event.

Riding boy Allah Rakha, however, escaped scathing on Kabaria, who also ran off the frame suspiciously.

All the events were contested over the sprinting distance of 900 metres each.
