KARACHI: `Signal-free corridor to be ready by June

KARACHI, March 19 The construction of a third signal-free corridor — from Saddar to Safoora Goth — will complete within four months, said City Nazim Mustafa Kamal on Thursday.

He was addressing a formal foundation stone laying ceremony of the 18-kilometre-long corridor and two-kilometre-long Preedy Street.

The project is likely to cost the government around Rs2.25 billion. The corridor, according to the construction plan, includes an interchange flyover at Jail Chowrangi and overhead U-turns at various points.

The nazim said that the corridor would provide a signal-free drive to people from Saddar to Safoora Goth and even up to the main gate of Malir Cantt.

The new signal-free corridor could also be used as an alternative to Sharea Faisal and M.A Jinnah Road, he added.

He said that the 40-year-old Preedy Street project had now been revived in his tenure after accomplishing what he described as the daunting task of shifting 1,385 families and shops to alternative places.

The old residents of Preedy Street had given great sacrifices for the betterment of the city and they would not be left homeless, he said.

He said that 40 per cent of the total work of the corridor-III had already been completed and the relevant staff had been given a four-month deadline to complete the project. However the deadline could extend for a month in case of a delay, he added.
