Two die in separate accidents

KARACHI, Sept 5 A pedestrian was knocked down by a speeding dumper in Gulbai area a little before sunset on Friday.

Police said the victim, who could not be identified till late in the night, died on the spot and his body was shifted to the Civil Hospital. After completing the legal formalities, the police sent the body to the Edhi morgue for identification.

In Qayyumabad, a hit-and-run vehicle hit a motorcycle, killing its rider, Rashid Yousaf, 25, instantly. The accident occurred near Qayyumabad Nadi, police said, adding that the victim's body was sent to the Jinnah Hospital for legal formalities.

Electrocuted

A 43-year-old man, Zafar Iqbal, was electrocuted in a washroom at the Karachi airport.

Police said the victim, an airport employee, suffered a fatal shock in a lavatory of the engineering department.

The body was sent to the Jinnah Hospital for legal formalities, police said.

'Bandit' held

An alleged bandit was arrested following an encounter with police at Gurumandir. His accomplice, however, managed to escape from the scene.

The police said that two bandits were trying to snatch a motorcycle from its rider near the Tanzeel-ul-Islam mosque at Gurumandir. During the bid, they shot the victim in the leg. Hearing the gunshot, two constables posted at the mosque rushed to the spot. An exchanged of fire took place after which one of the bandits, later identified as Javed, was arrested. His accomplice, Junaid, managed to escape. The motorcycle was taken into custody.

The police claimed that the suspect had confessed to having committed around 20 hold-ups in the area.
