HYDERABAD: Official held on charge of blasphemy

HYDERABAD, April 8: The Tando Adam police here on Tuesday arrested the assistant postmaster-general, operations, Sindh, Shams- ul-Hassan Zaidi, in connection with a blasphemy case registered against him.

An investigation team of the police arrived in the office and sought permission of the deputy postmaster-general to arrest the accused. The complainant in the case, Allama Ahmed Mian Hamadi, accompanied the team.

He had lodged the case under sections 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 295-C {use of derogatory remarks in respect of the Holy Prophet(PBUH)} of the Pakistan Penal Code.

According to the complainant, the accused had allegedly written a letter to the district president of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, Abdul Waheed Qureshi, in which he had claimed to be an Imam.

Showing the letter to journalists, Hamadi said that such letters were also sent to Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani, Qazi Hussain Ahmed and other MMA leaders.

Before being arrested, Zaidi made a telephone call to his family.

SHC: The Sindh High Court, Hyderabad circuit bench, on Monday directed the additional AG, Sindh, Masood A. Noorani, to file comments of the SHO, Bhittai Nagar police station; the in charge, Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC); the in charge, investigation, Bhittai Nagar police station; and the DPOs, operations and investigation wings, on a constitutional petition, seeking registration of a murder case against Mahboob Ali Sipyo, in charge, ACLC, and other ACLC officials in the wake of the killing of an estate agency owner, Hubdar Leghari, in Qasimabad on Feb 27.

The state counsel has been asked to submit comments by April 14.
