National flag versus political party flags
IT is a common scene in our country that during processions and gatherings of a political party or group, one is sure to see a large number of party flags carried by the workers of the respective party.
These party flags are hoisted on electricity poles, telephone posts, even trees on the route of the procession/rally, on trucks, jeeps, cars or any other mode of transport carrying party leaders and workers and decorated in the surrounding areas.
Even advertisements in newspapers about party anniversaries are full of party flags along with colourful photos of party leaders, that too paid from the money collected in the shape of taxes from the poor people of the country.
Unfortunately, the national flag is conspicuously missing in all such publicity, processions and gatherings.
On the contrary, the situation in foreign countries is quite the opposite. National flags are prominently displayed and carried in political processions and gatherings, be it the ruling or opposition party. National flags tend to hold greater prominence compared to those of the party's.
A national flag is the symbol of statehood and national pride and should not be noticeably missing in any political or social gathering of its people. Our allegiance is first and foremost to the country and to its flag. Party flags are secondary.
I urge our political leaders to give a serious thought to this aspect. Mere slogans of their love for the country and sacrifices which they claim to have made are not enough.
It should also be reflected in their actions. The media can also play an important role in highlighting this issue and educating people about the true significance of the national flag.
