LEARNING English is essential for the progress and prosperity of a country like Pakistan. The English language holds great significance for students in the acquisition of higher education.

The Internet can store the student's mind with millions of facts and knowledge on subjects from all around the world. However, if they don't know any English the Internet will remain absolutely useless for them.

The remedy lies in learning English and having a perfect command over the language. Private institutions keep providing opportunities to students to learn English in the best way possible. It may be recalled that a few decades back the translation method was considered as the best method for learning English.

The bilingual way proved to be highly successful with, of course, some ifs and buts. The standard of English remained quite satisfactory during the era and a graduate could write error-free English.

With the introduction of the 'direct' method, in which bilingualism is totally discarded, students' writing skills have taken a backseat and is a cause for alarm.

The translation method is helpful in learning a foreign language as L1 remains a back-up source and facilitates students to retain the grammar, vocabulary, phrases, etc., of the foreign language.

For several decades, the translation method was reflected in every English question paper, which is why the student during later years responded to English with ease.

There are a number of methods for teaching English but sense and sensibility demands that a method which suits the temperament and calibre of our students be adapted.

Intensive practice of translation instils confidence in students to write flawless English which is the need of today's society.
