ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan announced on Monday its team for the May 11 elections, which he likened to his 1992 World Cup winning team, a mix of young and experienced players.

“The PTI has decided to award 80 per cent tickets to those candidates who have never been in the national and provincial assemblies to set an new trend in the country, where parties still go for the so-called electables,” Mr Khan announced at a press conference at a hotel where the party unveiled names of its candidates who were less than 40 years of age.

Thirty-five per cent of the PTI’s candidates belong to this age group, out of whom 25pc ticket-holders fall in the age bracket of 25 to 35.

Introducing some of them sitting on his left and right, the PTI chief yet again predicted election victory for his party on May 11, saying “next general elections are going to be an interesting match between those who believe in the politics of self-interest and his young brigade roaring to take on them”.

Mr Khan said all these candidates had been chosen through an elaborate selection process in which local elected bodies of the party recommended them for tickets.

Mr Khan announced that no relative of the party’s leadership would get tickets for seats reserved for women.

In reply to a question, Mr Khan claimed that his was the only ideological party in the country working for bringing about change and asked people to vote for the PTI candidates if they wanted a real change in the country.

He also appealed to the masses to donate funds for the PTI’s candidates as some of them belonged to lower middle class and cannot bear the campaign expenses.

On the occasion, a group of PTI workers, apparently not happy with the award of tickets, raised slogans, questioning the scrutiny process of the party.

However, on the intervention of party leaders present on the occasion, the protest didn’t last long.
