Shabbir keeps Punjab Open Golf title

LAHORE: Mohammad Shabbir with a three-day aggregate of 13-under par-203 retained the Suzuki-Punjab Open Golf Championship title at the Gujranwala Golf and Country Club course on Sunday.

And the closest one to Shabbir was his Islamabad club mate, Mohammad Nazir who in the end had to concede victory by the barest of margins.

Shabbir and Nazir were the joint leaders on the first two days of the championship.

Nazir had a three days aggregate score of 12 under par-204.

The only consolation for Nazir is that he was richly applauded by all the professionals and experts for putting up a wonderful performance and apparent was his consistency throughout the competition.

Shahid Wahab Rao, secretary of the Punjab Golf Association, said the championship had produced a number of records. On the first day, 33 participating professionals showed their abilities by coming up with under par rounds. On the second day, the cut was made at a score of one over par and on the final day 22 contenders produced under-par rounds and four competitors had par rounds.

In the amateurs section, Ghazanfar Mahmood of the Rawalpindi Golf Club won the first gross with scores of 72, 70 and 75 and an aggregate of 217.

In the ladies’ competition, top position was claimed by Tahira Nazir (Rawalpindi) while Shahzadi Gulfam (Garrison, Lahore) remained runner-up. Ana James Gill of Royal Palm came third.
